Meet David Borg, training out of Methodical Muay Thai in Gladstone, Queensland. Today we discuss the best advice he's ever received and why George Mann and Chadd Collins are his favourite fighters.
Here are his 5 questions...
Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in Muay Thai?
I was introduced to Martial Arts at a young age ( 7 or 8 ). I started off in Taekwondo and trained for about 8 years, at the end I lost my passion with it. With dad trying to keep me out of the house and be active, it was a struggle to find something new to try. When I was 16, I met someone via the TKD club who had a couple of fights, he had experience in Muay Thai but mostly MMA. He invited me over to train in his garage, he taught me the basics: how to hold pads, kick pads, punch, kick etc. I instantly got hooked when I sparred for the first time, landing a clean hard punch and didn't have to apologise. 😂 I went every week with a heart full of fire to train in his garage for about half a year. Eventually I joined Gladstone Martial Arts Academy to be trained under Rob McIntyre and Troy Bennet. My dad made a deal with me that I was only allowed to train if I agreed to no fighting until I was 18 years old. I had my first fight 6 months later.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
'You're never ready until you do it' The best advice I've heard not just for fighting, but for life.
What’s your favourite technique to use in a fight?
Don't really have a favourite technique.. I use to really love my elbows and I still do! But after my last couple of fights, I've really started to find a passion for my boxing 🥊
Who is your favourite current Australian Muay Thai fighter?
That's a hard one! I can't really pick but my top 2 would have to be Chadd Collins and George Mann. I've been lucky enough to watch Chadd fight live and even train with him personally. It may not happen anytime soon, but it is long term goal for me to stand across the ring from him.
What is your favourite hobby outside of Muay Thai?
I'm quite a stay at home person outside of Muay Thai. So I guess playing games or netflix is my 2nd and 3rd favourite hobbies 😅
